Museum of Mediterranean Masks
In Mamoiada, the museum that tells the story of the Carnival of Barbagia – Mamuthones, Issohadores, Boes and Merdules, Sos Thurpos – and of masks from all over Europe, with multivision and virtual reality.

The Museum of Mediterranean Masks (Museo delle Maschere Mediterranee) in Mamoiada tells the story of the traditional Carnival of Barbagia and its links with masks from all over Europe. At its heart is Barbagia, with the Mamuthones and Issohadores of Mamoiada, the Boes and Merdules of Ottana and Sos Thurpos of Orotelli, alongside the traditions of Friuli, South Tyrol, Basilicata, Calabria, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal and Ukraine.
Multivision, interactive audio guides, a sensor-equipped Mamuthone mask and the OCULUS virtual reality headset take visitors right into the parade and the dressing ritual, and give a close-up look at how the traditional Mamuthone mask is handcrafted.
The museum is part of the Mamoiada Civic Museums System, together with MATer, devoted to menhirs, necropolises and nuraghi, and the Museum of Culture and Work, devoted to the farming and shepherding world (both temporarily closed to the public for renovation).
Guided tours in Italian, English, French and Spanish; by reservation, “The Cradle of the Mamuthones and Issohadores”, the wooden mask workshop and educational workshops for schools.
