Lateen sailing boat trip in Stintino and the Gulf of Asinara

The lateen sail is the historic sail of the Mediterranean, the one that powered Stintino’s fishing boats for centuries. With Asinara’s Latin Sails you get to sail under one for real, aboard Il Professore, an eight-metre wooden gozzo built in 2006 by master shipwrights in Porto Torres.

This is a slow, intimate trip: 7 guests at most, well away from the crowded tour boats, with Laura and Giovanni telling the story of the coast in five languages.

The trip

You sail along the Stintino coastline and into the Gulf of Asinara, following the wind and the sea conditions. There are several stops in the most beautiful coves to swim and snorkel in crystal-clear water, where you may even spot Roman amphorae on the seabed. With a little luck you’ll meet the dolphins that live in the waters of the National Park.

On board you’ll enjoy a snack of traditional Sardinian produce with a glass of chilled Vermentino.

Two trips a day

• Morning: boarding at 9:45am, back at 1:30pm.
• Afternoon: boarding at 2:45pm, back around 6:30pm.

Good to know

Meet at the kiosk bar of the Marina di Stintino tourist port, 15 minutes before departure. Paid parking is available near the harbour. Pets are welcome. Places are limited, so it’s best to book at least 24 hours ahead. Trips run from June to October and the route may change with the weather.
