Torpè is a farming town of about 2,700 people in the Baronia, a few kilometres from Sardinia's north-east coast, between Posada, Siniscola and Budoni. From its hills you can see north to Tavolara and south to the Gulf of Orosei. With Lake Maccheronis, the forests of Tepilora Park and a fine nuraghe, it's ideal if you want to mix the beach with days out in nature.

What to see in Torpè

San Pietro nuraghe

The best-known monument is the San Pietro nuraghe, a central tower ringed by smaller ones; one of them was reused in Roman times. The area also has domus de janas (rock-cut tombs), such as those at Predas Ruias, plus giants' tombs and other nuraghi.

The old centre and hamlets

The historic centre, which inspired Sardinian painter Mario Delitala, is home to the parish church of Nostra Signora degli Angeli and, next to it, the church of Sant'Antonio. The town hall hosts a photo exhibition on old customs. In the hamlets of sos Rios and Concas you can still see old mud-brick and stone houses; Concas also has the church of San Giuseppe.

Lake Maccheronis

The Maccheronis reservoir on the Posada river is ringed by cycle paths and flanked by the sa Dea pine wood: a lovely place for a walk or a bike ride.

Things to do in Torpè

Part of the municipality lies in the Tepilora, Sant'Anna and Rio Posada Regional Park, a wildlife reserve home to fallow deer and mouflon. The Usinavà and su Lidone forests cover over a thousand hectares of holm oak, cork oak and scrub, with trails toward peaks like Monte Nurres, Cuccuru 'e Luna and Monte Nizzu. Go hiking, mountain biking, riding or birdwatching; the sea at Posada and Budoni is fifteen minutes away for beach days, boat trips or kayaking. History

People have lived here since the Neolithic, as the rock-cut tombs show, and the Bronze Age filled the land with nuraghi and giants' tombs. In the 12th century the village, called Torpè di Posada, was part of the curatoria of Posada in the Giudicato of Gallura. Under the Aragonese it joined the barony of Posada and, in the 17th century, the county of Montalvo. In the 18th century settlers from Buddusò founded the hamlets of Brunella, Talavà and Su Cossu; in 1839, when feudalism ended, Torpè bought its freedom and became a municipality.

What to eat and buy

Torpè is known for its citrus groves. Expect Baronia flavours: sheep and goat cheeses, cured meats, pane carasau, roast meats and almond sweets, with local wine. The Torpè produce show celebrates local products.
