Flussio (Frussìo in Sardinian) is a small Planargia village of around 400 people, seamlessly joined to neighbouring Tinnura along the SS292 road. It lies on a gentle slope between the lower Temo valley and the basalt ridge of Pedra Senta, a few kilometres from Bosa. It is famous across Sardinia for baskets woven from asphodel and for Malvasia wine: a perfect stop if you love crafts, wine and authentic villages.

What to see in Flussio

Asphodel Museum

In the village centre, it tells the story of the craft that made Flussio famous: weaving dried asphodel stems into baskets and trays, a skill handed down by the village women through the generations.

Churches

The parish church of San Bartolomeo dates back to the 12th century and is now incorporated into a newer building. Legend says Saint Bartholomew himself taught the villagers to weave. Also see the church of Santa Maria della Neve, starting point of the patron saint's procession.

Archaeology

The territory holds the nuraghi (Bronze Age stone towers) Giannas, Murciu, Caddaris and Carcheras and the giants' tombs of Sos Trainos and Sa Figu Bianca. Near San Bartolomeo there is a megalithic wall, probably Nuragic, and Roman remains were also found here in the late 19th century.

History

Settled in Nuragic and Roman times, in the Middle Ages Flussio belonged to the Planargia district of the Giudicato (medieval Sardinian kingdom) of Torres. After 1259 it passed to the Malaspina and in 1308 to Arborea; around 1420 it became an Aragonese fief of the Villamarina family, and in the 18th century it joined the Planargia marquisate, until it was bought out in 1839. The asphodel even appears on the town's coat of arms.

Food and shopping

The souvenir par excellence is a handmade asphodel basket; cane, willow, elm and olive are woven too. To drink, there is Malvasia di Bosa DOC, along with other wines, sparkling wines and spirits made in the village. Autumn is the best time to enjoy it.

Festivals and traditions

  • Sant'Antonio abate bonfires, on 16 January.
  • Tirende isciareu, in April: a community festival recalling the asphodel harvest, when bundles are hung to dry in the village.
  • Patron saint's feast, in August, with a procession from Santa Maria della Neve.
  • Santa Lucia and the su binu nou festival (new wine), in mid-December.
