Cuglieri is a village in the province of Oristano, built like an amphitheatre on the hill of Bardosu, at around 400 to 500 metres above sea level, on the western slope of the volcanic Montiferru massif. From its hilltop basilica the view sweeps over olive groves and woods down to the sea, where the municipality includes the seaside hamlets of Santa Caterina di Pittinuri and S'Archittu, famous for its rock arch. It combines an old town full of churches and history, a coast of coves and cliffs and the archaeological site of ancient Cornus. It suits anyone looking for uncrowded sea, mountain nature and living traditions, as a couple or with family.
What to see in Cuglieri
The basilica of Santa Maria della Neve
With its dome towering over the village, Santa Maria della Neve was the first minor basilica in Sardinia and is the symbol of Cuglieri. Tradition says a statue of the Virgin arrived from the sea and the oxen pulling its cart stopped only at the top of the hill, where the church was built. The churchyard offers one of the widest views of the west coast.
The old town, museums and former seminary
Explore the centre on foot through steep lanes, stone houses and churches. The former Capuchin convent houses the archaeological museum with local finds, while the olive oil museum, set in an old mill, tells the story of the product that made the village famous. The huge former seminary is a reminder that from 1927 to the 1970s Cuglieri hosted Sardinia's Pontifical Theological Faculty.
Cornus and Columbaris
On the Corchinas plateau, between Santa Caterina and S'Archittu, lie the remains of Cornus, a city founded by the Carthaginians in the 6th century BC and the scene, in 215 BC, of the Sardinian-Punic revolt against Rome led by Hampsicora. Within the site is the early Christian complex of Columbaris, with the remains of two basilicas and a rare baptistery.

Beaches of Cuglieri
S'Archittu
The hamlet is named after its natural limestone arch, carved by sea and wind and one of Sardinia's most photographed natural monuments. Around it are small coves of sand and rock and crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkelling. Jumping from the arch is dangerous and strongly discouraged.
Santa Caterina di Pittinuri
A small sandy bay enclosed by white limestone cliffs and overlooked by the Pittinuri tower. Sheltered and with services in the hamlet, it is easy for families.
Torre del Pozzo and Is Arenas
Further south, Torre del Pozzo takes its name from a coastal tower and a natural well in the rock, and is quieter. Beyond it begins the long beach of Is Arenas, with dunes and pine woods, loved by those seeking space and wind.
History
After the Nuragic communities, the Carthaginians founded Cornus, which became the centre of Sardinian-Punic resistance against Rome: in 215 BC Hampsicora and his son Hostus were defeated and the city passed to the Romans. The present village probably corresponds to Roman Gurulis Nova. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Judicate of Torres, which built the Montiferru castle here in the 12th century, then to Arborea and finally to the Aragonese kingdom; for a long time it was a fief of the Zatrillas family. Between 1821 and 1859 it was a provincial capital, a sign of its importance.
Food and shopping
Cuglieri is famous for its extra virgin olive oil, among the most prized in Sardinia. Montiferru is also home to the bue rosso, a local breed of red cattle with excellent meat. Try the panadas, savoury pies celebrated with their own festival, and the festive bread of Santu Tilippu. Crafts include cork items, rugs, tapestries and sa prenditura, the local fringe-work on towels and linens.
Festivals and traditions
Holy Week is the most solemn time, with confraternity processions and traditional liturgical chants. In January bonfires are lit for Sant'Antonio Abate and San Sebastiano; carnival has its own masked figures, the Cotzulados. Santa Caterina is celebrated at Pittinuri in May, San Giovanni in late June. The patron feast of Santa Maria della Neve takes place in early August, while in late August the feast of Santu Tilippu (Saint Philip Benizi) is linked to blessed bread.
