Quartucciu is a small town on the Campidano plain, about 6 km from Cagliari, sitting between the capital's suburbs and the first hills towards the Sarrabus. It looks like a modern residential town, yet it hides two major archaeological treasures: one of Sardinia's best-preserved giants' tombs and a Punic-Roman necropolis with hundreds of graves. It's a great pick if you're staying in Cagliari and want ancient history, wild nature just up the road and the easy pace of a Campidano village.

What to see in Quartucciu

Is Concias giants' tomb

At San Pietro Paradiso, along the SS 125 in the Sette Fratelli mountains, stands the giants' tomb of Is Concias, also called Sa Domu 'e s'Orcu (the ogre's house). A Nuragic collective grave from the 14th-13th century BC, it ranks among the best preserved on the island and is well worth the detour.

Pill'e Matta necropolis

Found by chance in 2000 during building work, the Pill'e Matta necropolis held more than 200 graves, almost all intact, used from the 4th century BC to the 5th century AD. A purpose-built roof now protects the site for visitors, and over a thousand finds (oil lamps, plates, cups) are displayed at the ex Casa Angioni cultural centre.

Churches

  • San Giorgio Martire, the parish church, built by the Aragonese in the 14th century on a Pisan plan, with a 16th-century altarpiece and the revered rain crucifix.
  • Sant'Efisio, a small Romanesque church now inside the cemetery.
  • San Biagio (17th century) and Sant'Antonio (late 19th century).

Nanni Arrù nuraghe

In the detached district of Sant'Isidoro you'll find the Nanni Arrù nuraghe, dating from roughly the 13th-9th century BC.

Things to do in Quartucciu

Quartucciu is a handy gateway to two very different landscapes. To the east, the Sette Fratelli park is a huge forest of holm oaks and scrub with gorges, streams and trails, home to Sardinian deer and birds of prey: ideal for hiking and mountain biking. To the west, minutes away, the Molentargius-Saline park is best explored by bike among lagoons and pink flamingos. History

People have lived here since Nuragic times, and the Pill'e Matta graves show a settled community in the Punic and Roman eras. The name recalls an ancient Roman milestone marked IV, which also appears on the town's coat of arms. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari, then passed to Pisa and to the Aragonese. After centuries of feudal rule, pirate raids and plague, it bought its freedom in 1839. From 1928 to 1983 it was part of Cagliari, then became independent again.

Food and shopping

The cooking is classic Campidano: home-baked bread, ricotta ravioli, malloreddus pasta, almond sweets. Local crafts include textiles and woven baskets.

Festivals and traditions

Among the most heartfelt feasts are Sant'Antonio in January and San Biagio in February, when the village gathers around its churches.

Getting there and when to go
