Tratalias is a small village in the Lower Sulcis, in south-west Sardinia, on the plain that slopes down to the Gulf of Palmas. Its treasure is the medieval old town, now almost deserted, gathered around Santa Maria di Monserrato, for three centuries the cathedral of the diocese of Sulci and one of the masterpieces of Sardinian Romanesque. Nearby lie Lake Monte Pranu and countryside full of nuraghi: perfect if you love art, history and nature without crowds.

What to see in Tratalias

Santa Maria di Monserrato

Built between 1213 and 1282, the church was a bishop's seat from 1218 to 1503, after Sant'Antioco was abandoned. It's a Romanesque gem with forms unique on the island and an elegant façade that dominates the old town square.

The old village

After a dam was built on the Rio Palmas in the 1950s, water seeping from the reservoir made the houses unhealthy and residents moved to a new village a few hundred metres away. Today the restored stone cottages house craft workshops, and three Baroque arches survive, perhaps former gateways to the citadel.

Spanish House and local museum

On the church square stands the Casa Spagnola, medieval in origin and rebuilt in the 1600s. Its annexe hosts the local museum, which keeps the cart used to carry the statue of the Virgin in procession.

Nuraghi and prehistory

The area has more than forty Nuragic sites (from the Bronze Age culture named after its stone towers): the most important is the Is Meurras complex. There's also a Neolithic village at Tracasi, linked to the Ozieri culture.

Things to do in Tratalias

The Monte Pranu park, around the reservoir, is a nature haven with marked trails along shepherds' tracks and old railway lines: explore it on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback, passing eleven nuraghi, four villages and two giants' tombs. The lake is also popular for sport fishing, and in the old village you can browse the craft workshops. Discover the experiences offered by local operators: you'll find them below.

History

Inhabited since prehistory, the area saw Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. In 1218 the seat of the diocese of Sulci moved here from Sant'Antioco, which was exposed to raids from the sea, and Tratalias became the religious centre of the Sulcis. From 1258 to 1355 it belonged to the Della Gherardesca, Pisan lords; in 1503 the diocese moved to Iglesias. Feudalism ended in 1839 and Tratalias became a municipality in 1853.

What to eat and buy

The cooking is rustic: snails in tomato sauce, cheese ravioli, roast suckling pig and spit-roasted lamb offal, best with a glass of Carignano del Sulcis, the local red. The workshops in the old village sell local crafts.

Festivals and traditions

The most heartfelt celebration is for the Virgin of Monserrato on Ascension Sunday: the statue is carried back to the village on a decorated cart, followed by a procession in traditional dress. The ritual recalls the move of the bishop's seat to Iglesias.

Nearby

  • Porto Botte and its flamingo lagoon, about 15 minutes away.

Getting there and when to go

Cagliari-Elmas airport is about an hour's drive: take the SS 130 towards Iglesias, then the roads to Carbonia and the Lower Sulcis. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking in Monte Pranu park; the Ascension festival, between May and June, is the best time to see the village celebrating.
