San Nicolò d'Arcidano is a farming village of about 2,400 people in the south of the province of Oristano, on the border with the province of South Sardinia, about 25 km from Oristano. It has no sea of its own, but it's well placed: a few kilometres away are the lagoons of Marceddì and San Giovanni, Monte Arci and the huge beaches of the Costa Verde. A quiet base for travellers by car or bike who want a real village atmosphere away from the busiest spots.

The village and its churches
The centre gathers around churches tied to local history: San Nicolò, the patron, recalls the medieval village of Architano Magno, while San Pantaleo recalls nearby Architano Parvo, which vanished in the 14th century. The countryside, green even in summer, is Arcidano's true landscape: vegetable gardens, wheat fields and vines.
Ancient traces
Several nuraghi once stood here, though none are visible today, and obsidian arrowheads from nearby Monte Arci have been found — signs of very early settlement.

History
In Roman times the area looked to the nearby port city of Neapolis. In the Middle Ages there were two villages, Architano Magno and Architano Parvo, in the Giudicato of Arborea; the second was abandoned in the late 14th century. After the Giudicato fell, the village passed to the Aragonese and then to the county, later marquisate, of Quirra, until feudal rights were bought out in 1839. In 1928 it was merged into Terralba, becoming independent again after the Second World War.
Food and shopping
Arcidano is a farmers' village: its coat of arms shows a wheat sheaf and tomatoes. On the table you'll find Campidano cooking — malloreddus pasta, home-baked bread, garden vegetables — and fish from the nearby Marceddì lagoons.
