Terralba is a town of nearly 10,000 people in the Campidano of Oristano, about 25 km from Oristano, between the Marceddì lagoon and the San Giovanni pond. It's the second-largest town in the province and has deep roots: it was a bishop's seat in the Middle Ages and is heir to the ancient port city of Neapolis. With its hamlet of Marceddì, a fishing village on the lagoon, it suits travellers who love birdwatching, lagoon fish and a mood far from mass tourism.
Things to see in Terralba
Co-cathedral of San Pietro
The main church was rebuilt in late-Baroque style from 1821 on the site of the 1144 Romanesque cathedral and consecrated in 1933. Inside are capitals from Neapolis and a 17th-century wooden pulpit.
Church of San Ciriaco
Founded in 1741 and rebuilt after the war, it hosts one of the town's best-loved feasts in August.
The centre and its Liberty buildings
The early 20th-century town hall and schools, in Art Nouveau style, tell the story of the Terralba that grew with land reclamation.
Marceddì
About 12 km from the centre, Marceddì is a small fishing hamlet on the lagoon, quiet in winter and lively in summer, with the church of the Madonna di Bonaria and a sea museum.
Things to do in Terralba
The Marceddì and San Giovanni lagoons form a protected wetland of about 1,800 hectares, with thousands of wintering birds: flamingos, purple herons, marsh harriers and purple swamphens. Perfect for birdwatching, photography, cycling along the reclamation roads and boat trips with local fishermen. Monte Arci and the Costa Verde beaches are nearby. Marceddì and the sea
Terralba meets the water mainly through the Marceddì lagoon rather than through proper beaches. For a swim, the Arborea shoreline is close by, and in about 30–40 minutes you reach the dunes and wide beaches of the Costa Verde near Arbus, also good for families.
History
The area was settled in the Neolithic thanks to Monte Arci obsidian and preserves remains of Nuragic villages. By the San Giovanni pond stood Neapolis, a Phoenician, Punic and then Roman port. Tradition says that after Saracen raids its people founded Terralba around the year 1000. Under the Giudicato of Arborea it was a district capital and diocesan seat, moved to Ales in 1503. In the 1920s a vast reclamation scheme turned marsh and malaria into fertile farmland.
Food and shopping
The lagoon supplies grey mullet, eels, clams and mussels, known in Marceddì as nieddittas. Typical dishes include malloreddus alla campidanese and, at carnival, zeppole fritters. Terralba gives its name to a DOC red wine made from Bovale grapes; the local cooperative winery also makes Monica and Nuragus.
