Monteleone Rocca Doria is the smallest municipality in the province of Sassari, with just over a hundred residents, perched on a limestone crag about 400 metres high and wrapped on three sides by Lake Temo. It lies in the hinterland of Alghero, about 40 km from both Alghero and Sassari. It is a place of silence and wide views, perfect if you love medieval villages, nature and walks far from mass tourism.

What to see in Monteleone Rocca Doria

The Doria fortress

On top of the crag, a natural fortress, stand the ruins of the 13th-century castle of the Doria family: stretches of wall, truncated towers, cisterns and rooms that tradition calls prisons. In the village, Via Doria, Via Castello and Via Orti still keep their stone paving.

The churches

The parish church of Santo Stefano, in the centre, dates from the second half of the 13th century: it has two naves, one late Romanesque, once the Doria family chapel, and a later Gothic one. On the northern edge stands the old parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate, in Romanesque-Gothic style.

Lake Temo and the nuraghi

Lake Temo, an artificial reservoir, curls around the village and offers very photogenic views. Its waters cover the site of Sa Tanca 'e sa Mura, thought to be a rare Punic settlement in northern Sardinia. The area also has several nuraghi, such as Funtana Calvia, Su Nie, Mannu and Badde Janna.

History

The area was inhabited in the nuragic age. In the Middle Ages the Genoese Doria family made the crag one of their Sardinian strongholds, with a castle and a walled village. In 1436, after a long siege, the Aragonese took the castle and King Alfonso V had it dismantled along with the village; only the churches survived. Some residents moved to nearby Villanova Monteleone, others rebuilt the village, which later became part of the County of Monteleone until feudalism ended in 1839.

Food and local products

In such a tiny village services are basic: the flavours are those of the Logudoro, with pecorino cheeses, roast meats and traditional breads, best sought in neighbouring towns.

Festivals and traditions

The patron saint's feast is held in early August, with a procession and a contest of improvised poetry in Sardinian.

Getting there and when to go
